The industrialists Mr C.M. Ramesh and Mr Sujana Choudhry still call the shots in the Telugu Desam. Eyebrows were raised when Mr Ramesh participated in the TD Legislature Party meeting at the NTR Trust Bhavan which was otherwise an exclusive get together of newly elected MLAs and MPs.
The party leaders who attended the meeting were surprised at the presence of Mr Ramesh who played a key role in the alliance between the TD and the TRS.
He reportedly played a key role in the selection of candidates along with Mr Sujana Choudhry and other confidantes.
Mr Naidu’s decision to nominate the newly elected Khammam MP, Mr Nama Nageshwara Rao, an industrialist, ignoring other seniors has also not gone down well with many party leaders.
“It was not right for Mr Naidu to invite Mr Ramesh to party meetings. He has no locus standi except that he is a friend of the party chief,” a TD legislator said.
The TD is surprised that the party failed due to the miscalculation of the seniors to have an alliance with the TRS and support a separate state.
“Mr Naidu should take party leaders into confidence and keep industrialists and power brokers at a distance. It’s unfortunate that he is still being influenced by money bags,” another MLA lamented.
Mr Naidu pointed out that the presence of the Praja Rajyam, delay in selection of candidates, failure to publicise the cash transfer scheme and colour TV scheme could have led to the party’s defeat.
However, many leaders from the coastal areas asserted that the tie-up with TRS and support for a separate Telangana caused the maximum damage.
