News: MIM strengthens its position in Hyderabad
Hyderabad, May 17 : No matter which party gets power in Andhra Pradesh and which party bags the maximum number of Lok Sabha seats from the state, voters in the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency always elect the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM).
The delimitation of constituencies has come as a boon for the Muslim political party as it improved its tally in the state assembly from five to seven seats, while retaining Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat for the eighth consecutive term. MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi won the seat for the second term despite stiff challenge from Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate Zahid Ali Khan, editor of Urdu daily Siasat who had the support of TDP allies Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Communist Party Of India (CPI) and Communist party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
The London-educated barrister had first won the seat in 2004, when his father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi made way for him after representing the seat for six consecutive terms since 1984.
The young Muslim leader, who took over as MIM president last year after the death of his father, defeated Khan by a majority of 113,865 votes. The MIM chief secured 308,361 votes while his nearest rival polled 194,196 votes. This was the first election after delimitation of the constituency, which earlier had three out of seven assembly segments in the rural areas. The delimitation increased the percentage of Muslim voters from 50 percent to 70 percent.
In the previous elections, the MIM had the BJP as its main rival. The BJP’s senior leader M. Venkaiah Naidu had also contested unsuccessfully from this constituency in 1996. MIM, which had an unofficial understanding with the ruling Congress party, maintained its supremacy in the assembly elections too, winning the two newly created assembly constituencies in the city and increasing its tally from five to seven.
Asaduddin’s younger brother Akbaruddin Owaisi won the Chandrayangutta assembly seat for the third consecutive term. Akbaruddin will continue to be the party’s leader in the assembly. The party also retained its traditional strongholds of Charminar, Yakutpura and Karwan and won the newly created Bahadurpura and Nampally constituencies. The MIM also wrested the Malakpet seat from the Congress party. Asifnagar, the constituency won by MIM in 2004, was scrapped in the delimitation.
While the MIM improved its tally, the number of Muslim candidates in 294-member assembly remained at 11. Three Muslims candidates of the Congress and one from the TDP were elected to the assembly. However, two Muslim ministers Mohammed Ali Shabbir and Mohammed Fareeduddin were defeated.
The number of Muslims MPs from the state came down from two to one. In 2004, Nizamuddin of the Congress was elected from Hindupur Lok Sabha constituency but this time the party fielded Khasim Khan, who lost the election to the TDP candidate. Muslims constitute about 10 percent of the 57.8 million voters in the state.
News: Congress puts up impressive show across Andhra Pradesh
By Mohammed Shafeeq, Hyderabad, May 17: The Congress party did not just retain power in Andhra Pradesh with a comfortable majority, but it put up an impressive show in all regions of the state in Elections 2009.An analysis of the party’s performance in both assembly and Lok Sabha elections shows that it has done extremely well in all four regions - Telangana, north coastal Andhra, south coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema.
The Congress party, which bagged 157 seats in the 294-member assembly and 33 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats without any alliances, performed really well even in the Telangana region, where it faced a strong united opposition comprising the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and the two Left parties. The issue of separate statehood to Telangana region did not seem to have cut ice with the people as Congress got a clear majority despite criticism from the opposition for not taking a clear stand on the issue.
Reversing its traditional stand against bifurcation of the state, TDP had last year backed the demand for separate Telangana, paving the way for an alliance with TRS. The TDP-led four party grand alliance was confident of winning a big chunk of seats in this key region.
However, lack of anti-incumbency and Telangana as a poll issue helped Congress to win 50 out of 119 seats. This is despite the defeat of several of its stalwarts including state unit president D. Srinivas, speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy and seven ministers in the region.
TRS, which emerged as a key force in 2004 elections by winning 26 seats, ended with only 10 though it contested 45 seats. TDP, which was nearly wiped out from the region in last elections, improved its tally to 39.
The Congress also won 12 out of 17 Lok Sabha seats in the region while TDP and TRS got two seats each. One seat went to Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM). The Congress also did well in north coastal Andhra, which went to the polls along with Telangana in the first phase April 16. Out of 34 seats in the region, the Congress got 24.
TDP could get six and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) of superstar Chiranjeevi four. The Congress won all four Lok Sabha seats in the region. In the politically significant south coastal Andhra, Congress won 51 out of 89 seats, dashing TDP’s hopes of PRP cutting into the vote bank of the ruling party. TDP bagged 29 seats and PRP nine. Congress also won 10 Lok Sabha seats in the region, leaving the
remaining two for TDP.
In Rayalaseema, the region both Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu come from, Congress won 32 out of 52 seats. TDP got 17 and PRP three including Tirupati which elected Chiranjeevi. Congress also got seven out of nine Lok Sabha seats in the region. TDP got two seats.
News: ressive Alliance (UPA) in the Lok Sabha elections.
NEW DELHI: The Congress core group met on Sunday to discuss the political situation and issues related to government formation following impressive performance of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the Lok Sabha elections.
The strategy meeting, held at Seven Race Course Road, was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her political secretary Ahmed Patel and defence minister AK Antony amongst others, party sources said.
It was the first high-level meeting in which the top Congress leadership discussed whether to take on board independents or parties of the Fourth Front like Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Janata Dal to form the government.
The UPA is short of a dozen seats to reach the majority mark of 272 in Parliament.
Another meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is scheduled to take stock of the situation following the poll results.
The sources said that after the CWC meeting, Congress leadership would hold discussions with the allies to finalize the details of government formation.
