World News: Obama outlines Guantanamo plans

Announcing plans to close Guantanamo Bay, President Barack Obama has said some inmates could be sent to US "supermax" prisons while others could be prosecuted in US courts.

President Obama added that the authorities had identified 50 Guantanamo inmates who are going to be transferred to foreign countries.

The military prison in Cuba was set up by the Bush administration in 2002 to hold foreigners captured after US-led forces invaded Afghanistan.

There are currently 240 prisoners at Guantanamo, while the authorities have released to foreign governments about 530 other men and teenagers previously held there.

Closing Guantanamo was one of President Obama's first policy announcements after taking office in January.
