An 18-year-old homosexual allegedly stoned his cousin, 12,to death when the latter refused to yield to his sexual advances.
Zaffar Ali, a Std IX student in Sidhra, Jammu, was arrested for murdering Asif Iqbal, a Std IV student.
A case under sections 302 and 377 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) was registered against him.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (headquarters) Mohan Lal Kaiph said Asifs family lodged a missing report at the local police station on March 27 after their son failed to return home.
"During investigation we rounded up some boys for questioning," Kaiph said. "One of the boys said he had seen Asif with his cousin on the evening he went missing. We immediately brought Zaffar to the police station. Under sustained questioning, he broke down and confessed to the crime."
Zaffars confession sent shivers down the interrogators. Kaiph said Zaffar had had sexual relations with Asif for some days. "On the fateful day, he took Asif to a dingy underground hall housing bathrooms. Zaffar was in an inebriated state and tried to make advances. But Asif resisted and threatened to disclose the matter to the family."
An infuriated Zaffar allegedly hit him with a stone, killing him instantly. "He later dumped Asifs body in the hall and left for home without anyone suspecting anything," said Kaiph.
After confessing to the crime, Zaffar took the police to the spot where he had dumped the body. "We have conducted the post-mortem and the report is awaited. We have formally arrested Zaffar under section 302 and 377 RPC," he said.
The families of both boys have gone into a shell. "Zaffars father is a lineman in the state government. We are also questioning him. Asifs father, too, is a government employee and both are brothers. The families are in a state of shock," said the DSP.
"We need to revive the old system of Samaj Sudhar Committees in mohallas. The youth should come forward to head these committees," said Zareef Ahmad Zareef, chairman of the Valley Citizen Council.
Zareef called on local imams to focus on social reforms in their sermons in mosques.
