Health Tips:Great Skin: Look Younger from the Neck Down

Great Skin: Look Younger from the Neck Down
Sure, your face looks young, but what about your hands? Your neck? Your chest? Erase years with these smart strategies.

Wise to the sun’s evil ways, you diligently coat your face in sunscreen every day. Nice work. But as you slather on the sunscreen, you may notice that the skin on your hands doesn’t look quite as ageless as your complexion. “Your hands, along with your neck and chest, are what I call give-away areas,” says Kenneth Howe, MD, a dermatologist in Brooklyn, New York. “They can show your real age, even if you have a youthful-looking complexion.” That’s because these three areas get almost as much damaging sun exposure as your face—but they get a lot less care. Remedy the situation with these strategies that will keep you looking gorgeous from head to toe for years to come.

Take time of your…hands
“Most women notice the first signs of aging on their hands in their early 30s, as the skin begins to thin and lose moisture and sunspots come to the surface,” says Robin Ashinoff, MD, chief of dermatologic and Mohs surgery and cosmetic dermatology at Hackensack Medical Center in New Jersey. In your 40s or 50s, you may also notice a loss of fat, which makes tendons and veins more visible beneath skin. There are ways to remedy the problem, but the easiest fix is to prevent it from happening in the first place by applying a thick layer of moisturizing sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) immediately after washing your hands.

Simple fixes: Improve the look of your skin by smoothing a retinol cream, like RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum, on the backs of your hands every night. Retinol “minimizes fine lines while stimulating cell renewal to even skin tone,” Dr. Howe says. For darker spots, ask your doctor about pre scription Tri-Luma, a blend of the bleaching agent hydroquinone and the retinoid tretinoin; a 30-gram tube costs $188 and lasts about six months (apply at bedtime for several months).

Intensive solutions: If you still see discoloration, head to your derm for a series of one to three treatments with an Nd:YAG or Q-Switched Ruby laser ($300 to $500), which can erase spots. Injecting hands with a hyaluronic-acid filler like Restylane will restore lost fullness; one to two syringes (costing about $850 per syringe) are usually needed to treat both hands, and results last about six months. If your skin is thoroughly dappled and has a crepey texture, fractional lasers can “sweep the area clean while stimulating a good deal of collagen production, making skin look healthier,” Dr. Howe explains. Unfortunately, the treatments aren’t cheap—you may need up to five at a cost of $1,000 each.

Romance: Surviving Long Distance Relationships

Surviving Long Distance Relationships

Romance is hard in the best of circumstances, but when you had hundreds of miles to separate couple, it can be tougher. Romance and relationships thrive on communication. Communication is even more crucial when those miles keep you apart. We crave human touch and when circumstances dictate that we have to be apart, it’s more important than ever to keep the contact up.

Sending emails, communicating through text messaging, talking in instant messages are all gifts of the technological age, but as close as they can bring people together – they are still a bit impersonal. Consider how wonderful it is to receive mail that isn’t a bill. Send bits of poetry, audiotapes of you singing or talking, puzzles, word games, or just long daily diary type entries.

These are all different types of ways to keep the contact between you and your partner. It’s fun to receive little gifts and to talk on the phone. Communication and contact are the only way to keep a relationship thriving. The distance can make it challenging, but it’s important to know that this is a challenge that can add closeness rather than rob it.

Keep your expectations clear and your trust in each other strong. If a call is missed or a message not responded to right away, remember that there’s likely a good reason for it. A good rule of thumb, in any relationship – long distance or otherwise – is to assume good intentions. By assuming good intentions, you can potentially avoid harmful misunderstandings that have no firm basis.

Think of the things you would like to receive or hear from your partner and do those. Pictures, poems, letters, phone calls, emails and even text messages, all work to keep the lines of communication open and strong. Nothing says “I love you” like ‘I love you.’

Romance: Advice for a College Romance

Advice for a College Romance

A good rule of thumb for college romance, on both sides of the fence, is that school comes first. Respecting your partner’s commitments and desires is a large part of the dating scene and nowhere is that more important than when you’re both in college.

The challenge of romance in college is that you are a very busy person. Your class schedule, your homework, and any employment you might have, and friends are all major time sinks. The image of the partygoer college student is strong in pop culture, but the reality of the situation is --- fewer parties and more stress. Students tend to get rowdy because it’s how they blow off steam, but even with the college party scene thrown in, dating in a ‘traditional’ sense is not the easiest thing in the world for a college student to do.

Whether you are involved in a long-term relationship or just met the perfect guy/girl and want to go out with them, keep in mind the following tips. College students are broke all the time. They rarely have a lot of disposable cash and an expensive date might be ordering pizza into a dorm room that they share with four other people. So be prepared to split the bill if you can or if you actually have extra dough, be ready to pay for the whole thing.

Avoid planning big dates during heavy testing times, because you’re both going to be stressing about exams. It’s better to spend time together when you’re not preoccupied with other matters and can really spend the time together. The best part of a romance in college is the ability to share all the new experiences, but keep your feet on the ground. College is a four-year experience and if you are putting your nose to the grindstone, romance – no matter how fulfilling it is ---can be a huge distraction from your endgame goal.

Some college romances can turn to deeper, more meaningful relationships and some can evaporate with the turn of each semester. Be prepared to spend time on the romance, but not to the exclusion of your studies and if you’re dating a fellow student, respect their needs as much as you want them to respect yours. A romance in college can be a fantastic thing, but it’s a side activity – not the whole banana.

Health: How to Burn More Calories and Thin Cankles

How to Burn More Calories and Thin Cankles
solve fat ankles

Q: Should I change up my workout to burn maximum calories?
A: Absolutely. As your body gets used to an exercise program, your muscles learn to work more efficiently—leading them to burn fewer calories. So it’s important to change your fitness routine every two to six weeks by either switching activities or altering your intensity.

For example, if you usually run 3 miles at 6 mph every other day, try adding fast intervals, going for a longer distance, or doing another activity (like cycling). After a few weeks, it’s fine to revisit your old routine; just continue to periodically mix things up to keep your body burning as many calories as possible.

Q: Is there a remedy for my fat ankles?
A: Leg shape is primarily inherited, but there are moves that can help. Simplest of all is the Calf Raise, which will sculpt the shape of your calves, making your ankles look thinner. Here’s how to do it: Stand with your heels hanging off a step or phone book, then rise up on your toes.

To increase the challenge, hold a dumbbell in each hand. Aim for 3–5 sets of 25–30 reps every other day. Cardio can help, too, by burning off extra fat and helping build even more shapely muscle.

Romance: Dating After 65

Losing a partner, whether wife or husband, after years together can be a devastating experience. For couples who have been together for more than thirty or forty years, the idea of looking for another person to fill the void their partner left behind can seem anathema. Dating after 65 is every bit the choice that the dating at 16 or 26 or even 36 is. It’s about mindset and how you feel.

If you are over 65 and considering dating again, don’t fight it – you wouldn’t be thinking about it if you weren’t ready for it. Your needs as a mature adult are going to be very different from what they were when you were in your teens or twenties or thirties. Recognize that what you want and what you are looking for, need to be in line. You can never replace a lost spouse, but finding someone just to enjoy time with doesn’t mean you are trying to replace that.

Of course, you aren’t looking to replace your spouse. They were a unique person and you had a unique history with them. Anyone else you date is going to be in their own way unique. The relationship or experience you have with this person is going to be different and unique to the two of you.

There are many opportunities through community centers, the Internet and professional services that offer to hook you up with likeminded people. If you elect to travel this route, be careful. Make sure the agency or service you select is reputable. While some may require a small investment, avoid any service that is looking for large sums of money.

Also, be aware that relationships start most naturally with a foundation of friendship. You are likely not looking for someone to sweep you off your feet or have the Harlequin romance, but friendship offers deeper and more meaningful rewards towards future relationships. And for the ladies out there, it’s a sad fact but pickings for single men over the age of 65 are pretty slim. For the gentlemen over 65, he will find a greater selection. Take your time, enjoy meeting others and if you are ready to date, go for it.

Business News: Tata do a ’nano’ in housing

Tata do a ’nano’ in housing

The Tata group, which recently launched the low-cost car, Nano, today entered the low-cost housing segment to target industrial workers and other low-wage earners.

Tata Housing Development Company, a unit of Tata Sons, will open from Saturday the sale of application forms for over 1,000 houses under the brand “Shubh Griha”, priced between Rs 3.9 lakh and Rs 6.7 lakh, in Bhoisar, a distant suburb of Mumbai. It would launch around 4,000 such houses in other cities in four years, said Tata Housing Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Brotin Banerjee.

The Mumbai project is expected to be completed in the next two years and buyers will be barred from selling the house for six to nine months after the purchase.

The company would also launch two to three such projects in Bangalore and the National Capital Region (NCR) in the current fiscal, Banerjee said.

“We believe there is a huge opportunity in this segment as our study has shown that around 48 per cent people in the lower segment are currently staying in a rented accommodation and there is a lot of migrant population in industrial belts in cities,” he added.

The Mumbai apartments will be available in three categories — 283 sq ft, 360 sq ft and 465 sq ft. The company has brought in State Bank of India for sale of applications. The buyers need to book the flats within 20 days of the launch. The initial booking amount is Rs 10,000. Based on a lottery, as done in the Nano’s case, the company will declare a first list and a waiting list within 15 days of the final booking.

Tata Housing is expecting a revenue of Rs 100 crore from the Bhoisar project. It will do a joint development with the land owner, with the latter getting a certain percentage of revenues. It will also follow the joint development model and outright purchase in other planned projects and is talking with state governments across the country in this regard, according to Banerjee.

The Tata move closely follows those of other developers such as Unitech, Omaxe, Raheja and Ansal, who are also planning low-cost projects in suburbs of satellite towns or smaller cities to target the bottom segment and generate more cash.

Unitech plans to launch residential projects in the Rs 5-10 lakh range in metros like Chennai and Kolkata and suburban cities like Gurgaon over the next few months. Omaxe has already launched a sub-Rs 4-10 lakh project at Peetampur and the Dewas industrial area near Indore to target industrial workers. It had sold half the project, a company spokesperson said.

According to a research report released by the Tata housing arm, the country faces shortage of 24.7 million dwelling units, of which more than 70 per cent fall in middle and low income groups.

Business News: Hyundai to launch i20 diesel by year-end

Korean auto major Hyundai Motor Company will bring the diesel variant of its premium hatchback ’i20’ by the end of this year as part of its plan of introducing at least two new products in the Indian market annually for the next couple of years.

The company is looking to enhance its share in the one million-units Indian car market through newer products."We currently have a 20.4 per cent market share. For the year ending 2009 we will look at growing our market share further by three per cent," Hyundai Motor Senior Vice-President (Asia & Pacific Division) Young-Kil Chun said here.

He said according to industry forecasts the Indian market will grow to about 1.5 million units by 2012-13."We should by then have a market share of over 25 per cent, exporting to well over 110 countries. So we will grow along with the Indian market and keep pace," Chun said.

"India will play an important role in the Asian market. Our global target is to reach a 6 million units capacity by 2013 (Hyundai and Kia plants combined)," he added.

Another official at HMC headquarters here said: "Hyundai plans to introduce at least two new products in the Indian market annually for the next couple of years. The i20 diesel variant would be the next in line with launch scheduled for later in 2009."

Currently the i20 is available in India only in the petrol variant and is priced between Rs 4.79 lakh and Rs 5.82 lakh (ex-showroom).The official said Hyundai Motors India Ltd (HMIL), the company’s wholly-owned Indian arm, is targeting a total production of 580,000 units during 2009, including 300,000 units for the domestic Indian market and 280,000 units for export.

HMIL had reported domestic sales of over 240,000 units and export of around 249,000 units during 2008.Hyundai’s plants in India, along with those in China and the Czech Republic, would see increased activity as the company shifts focus into emerging markets and smaller cars.

"The share of emerging markets in our total sales would go up to 44 per cent in 2009, from last year’s 42 per cent. We plan to maximise our sales efforts on India, China and the Middle East," the official said.

The share of small cars in the company’s global sales is likely to touch 60 per cent this year, a jump from the 2008 figure of 55 per cent, the official added.Hyundai, the fifth largest auto maker in the world with a global sales of 4.23 million units, is also focusing its strategy in the hybrid car segment."This July we would be launching the Avante LPI HEL (Alanta) in selected markets. It would be the world’s first hybrid car with LPG and lithium battery," the official said.

In 2010, Hyundai’s next hybrid vehicle, the mid-sized sedan Sonata HEV would be ready for the US market."Our plug-in HEV would be ready by 2013 and we are also developing the stop/start technology. However, despite all this hybrids will still form only a small proportion of the global auto production and we are, therefore, also looking at the alternative energy engine," the official added.

Business News: LIC takes stock-specific view

Ignores Irda directive capping holdings at 10%.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority directive capping a life insurer’s holding in a company at 10 per cent has had little impact on Life Insurance Corporation’s (LIC) investment decisions.

While the public sector insurer has been permitted to hold on its stake in companies where the limit was breached, LIC is deciding on its investment based on the outlook on individual stocks.

As a result, according to the data culled out by Business Standard, during the fourth quarter of 2008-09, the largest life insurer has marginally reduced its stake in at least 10 companies where the exposure was over 10 per cent. At the same time, it retained its stake in close to 10 companies (see table). And, in case of one company — Hindalco — it raised its stake from 8 per cent at the end of December 2008 to 10.42 per cent at the end of March 2009 and breached the 10 per cent ceiling.

Business News: SBI may review deposit rates by month-end

State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest bank, may review interest rates on deposits by May-end.

O P Bhatt"We will review interest rates at May-end. In general, there seems to be a trend of softening interest rates on the deposit side," said Chairman and Managing Director O P Bhatt on the sidelines of the inauguration of an inward remittance cell in Kolkata on Friday.

The bank has recorded a 30 per cent growth in credit and 39 per cent growth in deposits in 2008-09, said Bhatt. The bank has projected a 25 per cent growth in credit and deposits for the current financial year, he added.

"Our deposit rates are based on the market condition, competition and fund supply. Our deposit market share has grown by 200 per cent in the past. We have been receiving $200 million every day as deposits. In April too, our term deposits grew very fast. We felt that there was an excess of supply over demand, thus we reduced our deposit rates."

When asked, if SBI was contemplating a rate cut on lendings, Bhatt said, "We are offering the cheapest interest rates in every segment. We are providing the cheapest home loan in the country at 8 per cent."

There has been an increase in non-performing assets and pressure on margins, he said.

Commenting on whether SBI would put a curb on sub-prime lending rate (PLR) loans as is the case of Punjab National Bank (PNB), he said, "PLR In India is a complex issue. I don’t know if PNB will be able to abide by what it said. They have already said that sub-PLR loans will have to be referred to the chairman." Recently, the bank had reduced interest rates on domestic term deposits by 25 basis points across maturities, effective from May 4. At present, on 1,000-day deposits, it offers 8 per cent interest for deposits below Rs one crore.

Capital raising plan

The bank may look into various options such as follow-on offer, preferential issue and rights issue, for its Rs 20,000-crore capital raising plan for the current financial year.

"We need capital for growth and there are many ways of raising it. Among various capital raising options such as rights issue, preferential issue, follow-on offer, our preferred option will be a rights issue," said Bhatt.

The bank would require about Rs 70,000 crore over the next five years for expansion, he said.Inward remittance The bank has set a target of having a 50 per cent market share for inward remittance processing.

Out of the global $300-billion remittance business, India’s share stands at $45 billion, according to Bhatt."There was a time when Mexico was the largest receiver of remittances. Last year, India overtook Mexico. Out of the total individual remittances coming to India, SBI’s share is less than $10 billion. This percentage is still very small, and SBI should have at least 50 per cent share in remittances," said Bhatt.

Business News: Hyundai to shift i20 production to Europe

Hyundai Motors India Ltd (HMIL), the country’s second-largest car maker, said it was planning to shift the production of its premium hatchback i20 model for the export market from Chennai to Europe, following recent labour troubles that caused overseas sales to fall behind target.

If the move materialises, it will mark a major change in HMIL’s original strategy of making India an export hub for its small cars.

“We will address the European market from a local plant there,” confirmed an HMIL spokesperson. Hyundai has a plant in the Czech Republic and another is coming up in Russia. The i20 for the domestic market will continue to be manufactured in India.

The i20 is expected to account for 40 per cent of the Korean company’s exports for 2009-10. The company had earmarked 80 per cent or 120,000 units a year of the 150,000 i20s produced in India for the European market. Last financial year, the car maker exported 253,354 units (of all cars, including the i20) from India, about half its annual production.

Industry analysts, however, view the move as a means of pressuring the Tamil Nadu government to take tougher measures against labour, following a 17-day strike at the factory which ended on Thursday.

“The labour cost is ¤23 a day compared to ¤3 per day in India, so there is no question of the company shifting production and making the car at the same cost as India,” said the executive of an automobile company that has dealings with Korean companies.

Troubles had erupted after the company management declined to recognise the registered union and dismissed 65 people, suspended 34 and transferred several others for enrolling in the union. The union had also raised issues on Hyundai hiring contract manufacturers for direct manufacturing and denying leave benefits to workers.

The strike was called off after the management agreed to answer about 45 demands from workers, and not take action against them when they return to work. It also agreed not to come to any wage settlement agreement with the working committee till May 20.

The strike saw production drop 5 per cent and senior executives said the company met only 85 per cent of its export target. The i20, which is positioned as a premium car in the Indian market (priced at Rs 4.8 lakh), is considered an entry-level car in Europe.

Recently, most European governments agreed to offer special exchange bonuses to buyers of new cars. As a result, Hyundai saw exports grow more than 75 per cent in the last financial year.

Deccan Chargers, however, are well placed as they have played one match less than Kings XI and are placed fourth with 10 points.

If Kings XI Punjab want to make the last four, they cannot afford to lose against Deccan Chargers.’’We have to win 100 per cent of our matches and that’s not easy,’’ Kings XI skipper Yuvraj Singh saidayBoth teams will be clashing for the first time in the league and both will be looking to a score a point.

But problems are aplenty for Kings XI. Yuvraj (seen here) admitted that there are some concerns for his team.Yuvraj, who carried his bat with an unbeaten 58 in Thursday’s defeat against Chennai SuperKings, said that the bowlers are letting the team down.

’’Our bowling remains a major problem for us, especially bowling at the death. We have to sort out these issues,’’ he said.On his performance, Yuvraj said: ’’I’m not happy with myself either. I think I too need to brush up my game.’’

Sports News: Daredevils crush Riders, regain top spot

Daredevils crush Riders, regain top spot

Delhi Daredevils produced a clinical performance to crush Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets in their Indian Premier League (IPL) tie at Johannesburg on Sunday.

Chasing a meagre 124 runs, Daredevils romped home in 17.1 overs with AB de Villiers (seen here) smashing 40 after David Warner (36) and Gautam Gambhir (18) laid the foundation.

With the emphatic win, Daredevils moved to the top of IPL standings with 14 points in nine matches, dislodging the Chennai Super Kings.

Knight Riders again lost their way in the batting with Amit Mishra claiming three wickets, though Sourav Ganguly (44) and Ajit Agarkar (39) gave the bowlers something to defend.

The total was always going to be too small for a strong batting side like Daredevils.

Daredevils got off to a fine start through Warner (seen here), who struck five fours and one six, and skipper Gambhir. They put on 53 runs in 40 balls.

Knight Riders sensed an opening as Gambhir and Warner fell within a space of two overs and then Tillekaratane Dilshan was out to a brilliant piece of catching by Moises Henriques in the deep.

But de Villiers and Dinesh Karthik (seen in action during his innings of 17 not out) carefully negotiated the middle overs even as a few catches and run-out chances went abegging.De Villiers then hit a flurry of strokes to finish the match.

Earlier, Knight Riders made another shocking start, losing two wickets in the very first over.Skipper Brendon McCullum hit a second-ball six off Ashish Nehra, before his bad patch caught up with him and he was out lbw off the next ball.

Three balls later, Brad Hodge edged to de Villiers at first slip for a golden duck.Morne van Wyk gave his wicket away to Dirk Nannes and soon a familiar script was unfolding for Knight Riders. Two overs in the match and they had lost three wickets with just nine runs on the board.

Ganguly and Yashpal Singh (seen during his innings of 13) tried to stem the rot, adding 36 runs.

The inconsistent Knight Riders middle-order though cracked under pressure, as they returned to the pavilion playing some poor shots off leg-spinner Mishra.

Mishra struck with two wickets in his first over - Yashpal and Wriddhiman Saha - and Knight Riders were struggling at 46 for five.

Henriques became became Mishra’s third victim.Ganguly batted with resolve while Agarkar threw his bat in the end to take Kolkata past 100. But in the end the late flurry proved in vain.

Sports News: Gilchrist lauds Rohit Sharma wicket-taking

Kimberley: Deccan Chargers captain Adam Gilchrist could not help but praise Rohit Sharma for his fine bowling efforts in the IPL, wondering if his batting mainstay was fighting for the Purple Cap instead of chasing the Orange Cap for the highest run scorer.

Rohit took a hat-trick against Mumbai on May 6 and followed it up with three wickets for just 12 runs in Deccan’s 53-run thumping of Rajasthan Royals on Monday and Gilchrist was all praise for the young Indian.

Yeah, Rohit looks like fighting for the Purple Cap (for highest wicket taker) instead of Orange Cap. I was telling him like this after his hat-trick. He was fantastic today also and every team would have loved to have a player like him," Gilchrist said after the match against Rajasthan Royals.

Gilchrist also praised West Indian Dwayne Smith, whose late charge of 32-ball 47 lifted Deccan to 166 for seven, and Sri Lankan Chaminda Vaas (2/19) for contributing to the win.

"Dwayne (Smith) played beautifully to set up a difficult target (for Rajasthan) and then (Chaminda) Vaas put pressure right at the start of Rajasthan run chase on his first match," he said.

Sports News: Royals to clash with Chargers

KIMBERLEY: Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royals will fight to maintain their position among the top four when they meet in Indian Premier League (IPL) at De Beers Diamond Oval here Monday.

The clash will also see two former Australian team mates, Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne, captaining their respective side. Both teams have suffered losses in their last matches Friday. Defending champions Rajasthan faced their second defeat to Chennai Super Kings in this edition and with 11 points are placed third in the standings.

Chargers, who started the tournament on a high, lost a close match to Kings XI Punjab and are placed fourth with 10 points from 9 matches.

For Rajasthan Royals, it is the inexperience in the batting side that let them down while they still need an extra pacer to strengthen their pace attack. Yusuf Pathan remains the best bet for the Royals apart from Graeme Smith and Naman Ojha.

Good news for Royals batting is their last year’s prolific scorer Swapnil Asnodkar looked to regain his touch during his brief innings against Super Kings.

However, Royals’ batting pales before the Chargers.

Starting from skipper Gilchrist, the Chargers have Herschelle Gibbs, Rohit Sharma, Dwayne Smith and together they are capable of ripping apart any pace attack. With Andrew Symonds joining them, the Chargers have the strongest line-up in the tournament.

The team has purple cap holder, R.P. Singh, leading with 15 wickets. He has been amply supported by talented Pragyan Ojha with Rohit, too, turning out to be handy with the ball. The Chargers definitely miss the presence of a competitive paceman in Fidel Edwards even though compatriot Dwayne Smith has come good with both bat as well as the ball.

It is important for the Chargers to get their act together when they meet the Royals. Gilchrist has already made it clear that they will be taking each and every game seriously.

"We will go with an intention of winning. The competition is still so close. I don’t think any team walks away knowing that they are more secure, or knowing that they have a very good chance of making the semis," Gilchrist said.

The Royals have not lost to the Chargers so far, but then skipper Warne will have to come up with another master plan to tame the talented bunch of the chargers.

Sports news: Taylor propels Bangalore to thrilling win

Pretoria: Ross Taylor’s unbeaten 81 inspired the Bangalore Royal Challengers to a six-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League on Tuesday.

New Zealand batsman Taylor blasted seven boundaries and five sixes in 33 balls at Centurion Park, dominating a fourth-wicket stand of 38 with Rahul Dravid (12), before going on to partner Mark Boucher (13 not out) as Bangalore reached 176-4 in 19.2 overs in response to Kolkata’s 173-4.

Injured Shane Warne out of IPL

Kolkata captain Brendon McCullum had earlier played a superb innings of 84 not out in a stylish return to form and when Bangalore slumped to 74-3 and 122-4, all odds were on Kolkata notching a second win of the series. But Taylor capitalised on some wayward Kolkata bowling, especially from seamers Ishant Sharma and Ajit Agarkar, to steer Banglore home.

Bangalore openers Jacques Kallis (32) and Jesse Ryder put on 58 for the first wicket before Kallis was brilliantly caught by a diving McCullum in the covers off a short-pitched Murali Kartik delivery in the ninth over.

Left-arm spinner Kartik took 2-28 for Bangalore in his four overs.

Just five runs later Ryder top-edged Agarkar to Sourav Ganguly at third man to leave Bangalore on 63-2.Robin Uthappa added seven runs before trying to clear the boundary with a sweep shot off Kartik to be caught by Angelo Mathews in the deep.

Racism in Knight Riders camp: Jadeja

Rahul Dravid was the last wicket to fall, giving Ajantha Mendis a return catch in the 16th over.

"It’s nice to make runs but it breaks my heart when the team loses and today was not different," said Kolkata captain McCullum. "We had the game in the bag for most of it until Ross took it away from us."

Bangalore captain Anil Kumble praised his batsmen for successfully chasing down the total.

Sports News: Nothing works like victory: Tendulkar

Centurion: "Nothing works like victory," a happy Mumbai Indians skipper Sachin Tendulkar said on Tuesday night after his team cruised to an eight-wicket win over Kings XI.

"Generally, nothing works like victory. When you start winning, your body language is different, your intensity is different and that is what has happened today," he said after the match, which saw brilliant performances from Dwayne Bravo, Sachin himself and the spinners led by Man of the Match Harbhajan Singh.

Tendulkar was happy with his spinners and fielders and credited them for the win.

"We bowled well in the second half. Harbhajan and JP Duminy....these two guys brought us in the game and some brilliant catches. We were getting wickets at regular intervals and that was key to us," Tendulkar said.

Harbhajan was also happy with his performance as he gave away just nine runs in his four overs while also taking one wicket.

"I am very pleased with this performance. We fielded brilliantly. This was an important game for both the teams and am happy to stand on the winning side.

Priyanka is sexy girl next door

Tarun Mansukhani is mighty pleased with the kind of response he is getting for the bodies that Bollywood Actors John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra have acquired for Bollywood Movie DOSTANA. Accolodes have been coming in from all quarters as both John and Priyanka ignite the heat in their pursuit for acquiring best bodies in the town.

“While John has worked hard on his normal priyanka chopra 21 Bollywood Gossip Priyanka is sexy girl next doorphysique and made sure that heads (belonging to both women and men) turn around him wherever he goes, I am not surprised since he seems to have been born with a six pack abs.

What amazes me though is the strange body that Priyanka Chopra has”, says Tarun Mansukhani, debutant director who is beginning his innings with this Karan Johar production.

How exactly?

“Well, she eats so much and doesn’t even work out much. Still, she manages to hold her figure. I guess it’s her metabolism that allows her to be this way. With DOSTANA, she could well be termed as a sexy girl next door”, smiles Tarun.

Abhishek seems to be just the same though as in all his films, isn’t it?

“In fact Abhi too has gone through some transformation as he was still working on DRONA when DOSTANA began. He was in fact the fittest since even when John would be tired, he would push him to get back on his feet and face the camera”, reveals Tarun.

But he doesn’t seem to be flaunting his body the way John is in the film. Why is that case?

Defends Tarun, “See the film and you would know for yourself. The kind of body type that he is carrying is something like is required for the character. It is truly in conjunction with the film. In any case, Abhi is a completely changed person for DOSTANA and is looking really fantastic.”

Preity’s nieces are no different and just love to get into her shoes and outfits whenever possible. However the actress keeps her stuff away from them as she feels they don’t need them! “Preity gives away a lot of her stuff to her friends and the needy people but never to her nieces as she thinks they all are studying and will get spoiled if they wear such big brands from such a young age,” revealed Preity’s friend.

Deepika hurt with Saif’s glue with Bebo ?

Deepika hurt with Saif’s glue with Bebo ?

Genuinely, there’s a limit out there for everything you utter and looks like Saif has exceeded those limitations. Set on with his first production venture with ‘Love Aaj Kal’, the actor has paired up with Deepika Padukone, the sensuous bombshell of B-Town.

Striding ahead with the success of ‘Jab We Met’, Imtiaz Ali has been wielding megaphone for this romantic-entertainer.

Perhaps, the filmmaker is so excited about the onscreen chemistry of Saif and Deepika. Lekhin, things aren’t working out so well with Deepika as she seems to be quite vexed-up as Saif seems to persistently uttering ‘I wish Kareena was here instead of Deeps’. Oops! That’s not fair Saif.

Nevertheless, when interacting with channels she has said, “Fine! They’re in love and that’s a good thing. But I am quite confident about my performance”. Totting up, the actress has sang appraisals of Imtiaz Ali for he has depicted her characterization that’s so close to her real life effigy.

John Abraham has a hot body and the hunk has always flaunted it in movies like ‘Jism’, ‘Dhoom’ and the most recent one, ‘Dostana’. However, the guy says that he must have done so in the movies but as such he is a very shy person by nature.

Abraham was recently in Delhi to take part in a mass-workout event organised by Diet Pepsi and he was utterly embarrassed when some men out there asked him to strip.

The mob was heard screaming, “T-shirt, T-shirt!”. An embarrasses John replied, “See, that (flaunting his body) was in a movie. Otherwise I am very very shy…Well, if I take-off my T-shirt, then what will I wear.”

Now, in a latest move she has decided to shave-off her hair and go bald. She would tonsure her head for this Karan Johar movie she is doing with Kajol. The actress feels that she would look sexy with no hair on her head.

Indeed Kareen has a way of throwing-up surprises!!

Among those present were Mahila Rajyam honorary president J. Vijayalakshmi, executive president Shoba Rani and official spokesperson Vasireddy Padma.

AP used drug which cholera germ can fight off

AP used drug which cholera germ can fight off

May 11: The National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases on Monday confirmed what the city had feared: That the outbreak of disease in some areas is cholera. NICED said the cholera outbreak was due to water contaminated with sewage.

NICED said the deaths of 12 persons could have been caused by cholera, but it could not be confirmed as samples were not collected from the victims. “Cholera is endemic to Hyderabad as cases are reported regularly. So there is a possibility of epidemic,” said the he NICED deputy director (epidemiology), Dr Dipika Sur. “As the deaths are reported due to severe dehydration we can say the deaths may be possibly due to cholera.”

Dr Sur said the causative organism was Vibrio cholera 01 ogawa (El Tor) strain. Interestingly NICED was not told by state health authorities about the four deaths that occurred on Saturday and Sunday. “We don’t know about these deaths,” Dr Sur said.

Meanwhile, it turned out that the government was distributing tetracycline to fight cholera. Though it is the antibiotic of choice to fight the disease, at least six strains of the cholera germ are known to have developed resistance to the drug.

Tetracycline was distributed even on Sunday, following which NICED advised the government to shift to norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin. The government has issued an emergency circular to all hospitals and officials asking them to use these two antibiotics.

The joint director (epidemics), Dr Madhu Sudana Rao, said, “Apart from resistance of tetracycline, it can’t be used given to children as it is in capsule form and can’t be broken.” The Tetracycline oral solution is banned because it affects teeth, said the Drug Control Administration assistant director (vigilance), Mr Raja Bhanu.

NICED has made some major recommendations:
* Use Norfloxicin and Ciprflaxicin.
* Take up largescale chlorination of water.
* Begin cholera awareness campaign.
* Replace old pipelines.

The health principal secretary, Mr L.V. Subramaniam, said NICED had confirmed that 30 samples, including 12 cases at Fever Hospital and 14 at Gandhi Hospital, had tested positive for cholera.

All the patients with cholera were discharged. The government will try to track them down and collect more samples.

Cholera-positive patients still in hospital would be provided a separate ward to prevent its spread of disease, health officials said.

The government has begun distributing syrup enriched with zinc to distribute to children, on the advice of NICED.

Information pamphlets are being distributed to households in the affected area through self help groups and health workers.

Axe to fall on Satyam staff

Axe to fall on Satyam staff

Satyam Compu-ters is all set face the inevitable: a drastic cost-cutting exercise, which includes layoff of 5,000-strong non-billable staff.

Tech Mahindra, the new owner of the fraud-hit IT major, has prescribed a $200-million cost-cutting pill to get Satyam back to financial health.

According sources in the company, Tech Mahindra would place its cost-cutting measures, which includes a three phased layoff plan, before the Satyam board on May 15 for approval.

In the first phase, the layoffs will be effected in administration, human resource, and marketing. Support staff will face the axe in the second phase and the bench strength would be pruned in the final leg.

The first to be hit would be the support staff in the Satyam BPO, which would see layoffs this month.

“Some of the employees are already on the bench, who will be laid off immediately. The new management is also planning to entrust Satyam BPO’s HR and marketing functions to Satyam team and wind up Satyam BPO support staff,” the sources said.

The company has an ‘obscene’ ratio of support staff against the productive staff. “At present, this is 1:35 in Satyam, but the industry is now running at 1:80 ratio,” said the source adding that surplus non-billable staff has already been identified.

Figures available with Satyam indicate that nearly 3,000 employees are on the bench on different projects as nearly 15-20 clients have cut short their operations in business processing. “This has necessitated fresh cost-cutting measures,” a Satyam employee said.

Congress refutes TRS President’s allegations on Telangana

Congress refutes TRS President’s allegations on Telangana

The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today refuted the charge of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) President K Chandrasekhara Rao that the Congress had deceived the people of Telangana by not creating a separate State.

Addressing a press conference here, party spokesperson N Tulasi Reddy claimed that Mr Rao had no commitment on Telangana and was using Telangana issue only to reap political mileage.

He claimed that though the Congress was in the process of forming separate Telangana, Mr Rao had made the mistake of leaving the UPA, causing delay in the formation of Telangana. Mr Rao had committed a great mistake by earlier joining the Mahakutami and now the NDA.

Party spokesperson P Venkataka Rao said the CPI and CPI (M), who were the members of the Mahakutami, had to reply to the people on Mr Rao’s decision to extend support to the BJP-led NDA.

Chiranjeevi sees PRP as a major in national politcis

Chiranjeevi sees PRP as a major in national politcis

HYDERABAD: Prajarajyam president K Chiranjeevi claimed his party would emerge as a major force in national politics after May 16.

Speaking to the media on Monday, the PRP chief reiterated that the party would win more than half of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state and secure nothing less than 160 seats in the Assembly. He said Prajarajyam party has been in talks with other parties only at the secondary level and the real scenario would emerge only after the results.

Chiranjeevi said the party would hold talks at the top-level only after the numbers are revealed. "We are certain of PRP’s importance at the national level. We will take up all necessary steps once the results are out. If we get the required numbers, we start negotiations with like-minded parties who are keen on forming the fourth front," he said.

To a query on whether he was a contender for the post of prime minister, he mumbled and said he would speak once the numbers are out on May 16. "Everything depends on the number of seats we win. The issue is too premature for discussion. We will take it up when the results are announced," he added.

Lashing out at TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao for extending support to NDA, he asked the TDP chief to clarify on the `maha kutami’s’ stance on the step taken by KCR. "I have already stated that the so-called grand alliance is a `maya kutami’. Their single-point agenda is to come to power at any cost," he said.

He asked grand alliance members to clarify on the latest political drama unfolded by the TRS. "The TDP has already worked with the NDA and the TRS wants to work with NDA, while the Left parties are still keen to support the UPA to keep the BJP-led coalition away from power. The alliance members must clarify on this political mess," he said.

Referring to increasing cases of gastroenteritis and cholera in the state, he demanded imposition of health emergency in the state and take up remedial measures on a war footing.

Earlier in the day, Chiranjeevi held a two-hour interaction with Mahilarajyam members and sought their feedback to strengthen the party at the grassroots level. He promised all disciplined women workers that due recognition would be given to them by accommodating them in various nominated posts, including the Legislative Council.

TRS fuels Chandrababu Naidu fear

TRS fuels Chandrababu Naidu fear

New Delhi : K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s switchover to the NDA, for whom he campaigned in Amritsar today, could hurt the Left-backed third front more in Andhra Pradesh than in Delhi.

Left leaders are worried whether key Andhra ally Chandrababu Naidu might now be tempted to do a Rao, although there has so far been no concrete indication of that happening.

The problem for Naidu is, his hopes of becoming chief minister have been dealt a blow by Rao’s somersault.

In the Assembly polls held together with the Lok Sabha elections in Andhra on April 16 and 23, a “grand Opposition alliance” of the Telugu Desam, Rao’s Telengana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and the Left took on the ruling Congress.

The TRS contested from 48 of the 294 Assembly constituencies, and the seats it wins would be crucial to the alliance’s chances of coming to power in Hyderabad.

Although TRS sources have suggested the possibility of “being part of the alliance in the state and supporting the NDA at the Centre”, the Left is likely to find this unpalatable.

In such a situation, if the Telugu Desam cannot form the government in Andhra, it may be tempted to return to the NDA, especially since the Congress is its biggest enemy in the state.

Rao’s switchover, which he announced at the NDA’s Ludhiana rally yesterday, may also cost the third front four or five seats at the Centre. The TRS has contested nine Lok Sabha seats.

Sources said CPI leader Sudhakar Reddy had received a hint about Rao’s plans and had been trying to reach him for three days, but couldn’t get through to him. TRS leaders apparently kept telling Reddy that Rao had travelled to Punjab “on an invitation from (Parkash Singh) Badal”, the Akali Dal chief minister.
