Movie Gassips: John to do love scenes with Director's wife in 1-800-Love

John to do love scenes with Director's wife in 1-800-Love

After director Sam Mandes' spectacular spousal success directing his wife Kate Winslet in the richly resonant Revolutionary Road in '1-800-Love' John will be romancing his director Abbas Tyrewala's wife.

And he is cool about it. "I know Abbas and Pakhi well. They make a beautiful couple. There's absolutely no awkwardness about doing a love story with the director's wife.

Pakhi has co-written the script and knows her character and mine, in and out. She's an unknown face and extremely pretty. These are her biggest advantages. A beautiful woman whom the audience hasn't seen."

John is dead serious about this project. "I'm going to sit on script readings with Abbas, do workshops and rehearsals with Pakhi, just like Abbas did with the cast in Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. 'm hungry for acting challenges.

But most of the time my physicality comes on much too strongly on screen. People haven't really seen the performances I'm really proud of, like No Smoking, Kabul Express, Zinda and My physicality always takes precedence. But you know what? I'll change that. I've been in this industry only five years. People have started looking differently at me after Dostana. The body was talked about. But when they praise my performance it really feels good."

Where next? "Nagesh Kukunoor's Aashayein. I'm very proud of it.Yes, it has been delayed. There's a problem between Reliance and Percept that needs to be sorted. We're working on a solution.

Aashayein is a beautiful film and we have to release it. Another film I'm really excited about is Kabir Khan's New York. I know I've got it right this time.

Kabir says so. It's an awesome film. And I'm thankful to Aditya Chopra for showing faith in me at a time when I didn't have Dostana."

John describes himself as an off-roader. "I travel my own road. Like I'm doing Abbas Tyrewala's 1:800 Love. When he offered me that film he was directing Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. The film's producer Madhu Mantena had Ghajini in the making and I was doing Dostana.

By God's grace we all have a success on hand. So we're a proud team and very comfortable with. Aashayein. It's my intense love story and it's such a wonderful space to be in. Before Dostana I was only doing films that kept me within my comfort zone. Now I'm going to test myself as an actor as much as possible."

When questioned whether he would feel any awkwardness directing love scenes between his wife and John, Abbas Tyrewala said, "I hope not! If I can't remember they're acting then I lose the moral ground to ever a direct a girl in a love scene. Luckily I've never written explicit love scenes in my film.

The only explicit love-making scene I've conceived was for Vishal Bhardwaj's Maqbool.

That apart I like my writing to be benign. It doesn't matter whether my wife is acting or not. I can't forget my parents will be watching my film."

Romance: How to win a woman’s heart

According to the study, which was conducted by Northumbria University researchers, stubble is the way to win a woman’s heart. As for the reason, why women find men with stubble attractive: they find them tough, mature, aggressive, dominant and masculine and the best romantic partners.

The findings of the experiment, carried out on British women aged 18 to 44, could explain the appeal of actors such as George Clooney and Brad Pitt who cultivate their unshaven look. The explanation for the preference is not clear, but experts in human evolution say that that facial hair may be a signal of aggression because it boosts the apparent size of the lower jaw.

The research team believes that stubbly men may offer women the best worlds - not too strongly masculine, but mature and with the potential to grow a full beard. The researchers carried out the study using computer technology to alter pictures of 15 men’s faces. Five levels of facial hair were used - clean-shaven, light stubble, heavy stubble, light beard and full beard.

The pictures were shown to 76 women who were asked to rate them for masculinity, aggression, dominance, attractiveness, age, and social maturity. They were also asked how desirable each man would be as a short-term or long-term partner. Faces with full beards were judged to be the most masculine, aggressive and socially mature. They were also believed to look five years older.

They were rated the least attractive and the worst choice for a short-term relationship. Men with light beards were considered the most dominant. Those with light stubble were rated the most attractive and as the ideal romantic partner for short or long term.

News : Yuvraj Singh and Mandira Bedi cosy up in South Africa

According to sources from South Africa, Yuvraj Singh is believed to be more than just good friends with Mandira Bedi. Buzz is that the cricketer and the commentator have been bonding big time a couple of weeks after the Indian Premiere League took off.

“They were very good friends earlier, but somewhere along the way they got too busy with their schedules and couldn’t really keep in touch,” says our source, adding that Yuvi and Mandy caught up in SA like more than just long-lost buddies. The cricketer and television hottie’s bonding hasn’t gone unnoticed. The two have even made it to the the famous ‘fakeiplplayer’ blog as the author writes, “Sometime during this tournament, the Prince and Sandy Baddy Babe have renewed their long friendship.

They have been seen together in clubs, hotel lobbies and corridors having long discussions on the finer nuances of the beautiful game.” Reportedly, Prince is the blogger’s name for Yuvraj Singh while Sandy Baddy Babe is Mandira Bedi. Now this is something that isn’t too hard to believe.. since the Kings XI Punjab captain is reported to be quite a ladies’ man, considering his partying ways in Mumbai, Delhi etc. That was after he had broken up with long-time girlfriend, actress Kim Sharma.

Yuvi and Kim were in a relationship for four years.. and were reportedly even considering marriage. But it is believed that his mother didn’t exactly approve of an actress bahu right from the time they committed to each other. Initially everything was hunky dory, but after a couple of years, his mother’s dominance began to show.

Yuvi, who’s known to be a maa ka laadla, reportedly gave in under pressure from her.. and gradually he and Kim drifted apart, sometime in the middle of 2007. It’s believed that Yuvi used to call and SMS her till last year, but wisened a year-and-a-half since their split, Kim

Vedhika says one cannot survive by acting in glamour roles

Speaking to the media recently, Vedhika said,” The shooting of the film Malai Malai in which I am starring has been completed. My concentration is in acting and dancing.

They are asking me whether I will act wearing bikini suit or in glamour roles. It won’t suit me. I don’t give importance for glamour roles because I wish to continue in cinema for a long time. I am acting in a Telugu film directed by Chaitanya.

Rohit is pairing with me in this film. He is also the relative of ex Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu. 5 days shooting of this film has been completed. The Kannada film Sangma which I paired with Ganesh has been released and has been received well. I want to act in quality film which has good story. I don’t want to act in more films.”

Business News: Toyota cranks up heat on Honda with new Prius

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp said on Monday its new Prius had received pre-sale orders for 80,000 vehicles in Japan, kicking off what promises to be a fierce battle against hybrid rival Honda Motor Co.

Toyota, which has dominated the market for gasoline-electric cars so far, is looking to take back the crown after Honda's new Insight became the first hybrid ever to top the best-sellers' list in Japan last month.

"The hybrid market is going to be one of the fastest-growing segments in the world," said JPMorgan Securities auto analyst Takaki Nakanishi.

"With the global economy in a recession, luxury and large cars are not selling but fuel-conscious cars are in fact growing. Toyota's earnings performance is hurting right now, and they can't afford to lose the lead in this market," he said.

Introducing the third-generation Prius, Executive Vice President Akio Toyoda said the upgraded model, which costs about $3,000 less than the previous version, had received more than 80,000 orders ahead of the start of sales on Monday in Japan, where it aims to sell 10,000 vehicles a month.

"We lowered the price to appeal to a broadening customer base," Toyoda, who will be promoted to president next month, told a news conference.

The new Prius, first unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January, will also go on sale in North America and Europe this month, followed by other markets later. Toyota has set a global sales target of 400,000 units for the car in 2010.

Although gasoline prices have nearly halved since peaking last July, automakers expect growing interest in the fuel-saving technology with consumers continuing to trade in big SUVs in favor of small cars, even in the United States.

By 2018, JPMorgan Securities expects roughly one in every 10 cars to be a hybrid, with global sales reaching 9.96 million vehicles as more brands such as Daimler's Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, as well as General Motors Corp's plug-in Chevy Volt, join the market.

Hybrid sales are also being supported by governments offering consumers incentives to trade in older gas-guzzling cars in favor of more fuel efficient models to stimulate demand amid the worst industry slump in at least three decades.

VOLUME TRAP

The new Prius will start at 2.05 million yen ($21,620), or at least 300,000 yen less than what executives had originally said the car would cost.

The about-face came after Honda's Insight became an instant hit after going on sale in Japan in early February. Honda sold nearly 10,500 Insights in April, more than double its target of 5,000 units a month.

Toyota had originally planned to raise the price on the latest Prius because it packed more advanced features, a bigger, 1.8-liter engine and better mileage of 50 miles per gallon, or 38 km/liter.

With an eye on competing with the Insight, Toyota will also take the unprecedented move of continuing to sell the entry-level grade of the previous Prius in Japan at the same price as the Insight's 1.89 million yen, with a monthly target of 3,000 units.

Honda's boss was critical of the move. "You can't just suddenly change your pricing policy -- that's going to destroy the market," Chief Executive Takeo Fukui told Reuters last week.

"We're not paying any attention to (the Prius). They're not going to last long with that strategy," he added, speculating that the Prius would eat into sales of other Toyota cars and hurt its dealers.

JPMorgan's Nakanishi agreed that striking a healthy balance with sales of non-hybrid cars will be crucial going forward.

"As hybrids become more attractive and cost-competitive, we need to worry about how the other cars are going to hold their own. Hybrids still have lower margins (than gasoline cars,) so there's going to be some pressure on profitability. All that has to be taken into account while they sell their hybrids," he said.

Toyota's shares ended down 0.8 percent at 3,560 yen on Monday, outperforming the benchmark Nikkei average's 2.4 percent decline. Shares in Toyota, which is forecasting a $8.6 billion loss for the current financial year, have rallied about 23 percent so far this year, lagging Honda's 41 percent rise.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - American Express Co, the credit card and travel services company, on Monday said it plans to eliminate 4,000 jobs, or 6 percent of its workforce, as the weakened economy causes higher customer defaults.

The cuts are part of the New York-based company's plan to save $800 million over the rest of 2009. They are in addition to 7,000 job cuts and an expected $1.8 billion of savings from a restructuring it announced in October.

Like many rivals, American Express has been hurt by rising delinquencies among cardholders, with the U.S. unemployment rate having risen to its highest level since 1983.

On Friday, American Express said its net charge-off rate, or debt it does not expect to be repaid, rose to 10.1 percent in April from 8.8 percent in March.

"We continue to be very cautious about the economic outlook," Chief Executive Kenneth Chenault said in a statement. He said the cost savings "will be reinvested in the business to make sure we can take competitive advantage of opportunities as the economy begins to rebound."

American Express expects to take an after-tax charge of $117 million to $163 million in the second quarter, largely for severance and other costs tied to the job cuts. It said the cuts will occur throughout the company, saving $175 million.

The company also plans to cut spending by $500 million on marketing and business development and $125 million on consulting and other services, travel and overhead.

Michael O'Neill, a company spokesman, said the "vast majority" of the earlier 7,000 job cuts have taken place, and that the latest cuts will take place over several months.

In the first quarter, American Express's net income fell 56 percent from a year earlier, while the amount set aside for credit losses increased 49 percent, a regulatory filing shows.

American Express was one of 19 banking companies to undergo government "stress tests" of their ability to weather a deep recession.

It was among nine told it did not need more capital. The company has said it would like to pay back the $3.4 billion it took from the government's Troubled Asset Relief Program.

American Express shares fell 5 cents to $26.08 after-hours, after rising $1.90, or 7.8 percent, in regular trading. The company is part of the Dow Jones industrial average.

Business news: Sensex Today: Up Over 2000 Points with Upper Circuit - Close at 14000 Mark

The Sensex recorded its fastest ever 2,000 points surge in history, taking not more than a few minutes to jump from 12,173.42 to 14,284.21, as the bulls stormed the bourses following the Congress-led UPA front getting a strong mandate in the general elections 2009.

On expectations the new government would speed up reforms and give the necessary thrust to boost the sagging economy, the bulls shrugged off weak global markets and thronged the major Indian bourses today. So strong was their presence that the benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty hit the upper circuit in a flash. While the Sensex shot up by over 10%, the Nifty flared up by more than 15%, forcing the market authorities to halt trading for a couple of hours.

And the trend was not any different when trading resumed at 11.55 a.m., The Sensex, which had moved up by 1305.97 points or 10.73% to 13,479.39 when trade was halted for the first time this morning, shot up to 14,284.21 immediately on resumption of trade a little before noon, recording an incredible gain of 2110.79 points or 17.34% for the day. The Nifty, which had flared up to 4271.40 at the bell, galloped to 4384.30 and was up 17.74% or 651.50 points for the session.

As the Nifty hit the 20% upper circuit barely a minute after trading resumed at 11.55 a.m., trading on both NSE and BSE was halted for the day.

For Sensex, this is the first close past 14,000 since 21st September 2008. The Sensex had closed at 14,042.32 on that day. The Nifty recorded its best close since September 10, 2008.

With no Left parties in the coalition and the Congress combine winning the polls by a handsome margin, it is now felt that reforms will get a much needed thrust and that the new government will go all out to provide the required stimulus to revive the sagging economy.

Stocks across the board hit impressive highs this morning with those from the realty, banking, capital goods, power, metal and oil sectors attracting buying at sharply higher levels.

All the sectoral indices moved up sharply. BSE FMCG, which moved up by a sharp 7.21% gained the least today. The Healthcare barometer surged 8.06%.

The Realty index spurted 23.45%. The Capital Goods barometer shot up by nearly 22%. The Bankex, Oil & Gas and Power jumped 19.18%, 19.11% and 18.33% respectively. BSE PSU and Metal surged by over 16%. BSE Teck, CD, IT and Auto climbed up 11.2% - 14%.

BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices rose 11.75% and 9.05% respectively. Among 846 stocks seen in action during the short duration of trade today, 833 stocks advanced and 11 stocks declined. A couple of stocks ended flat.
