Representing Bollywood at the biggest event in world cinema, Cannes, is none other than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. This is the fourth time the actress is attending the film festival.

Eversince Devdas was screened there in 2002, Aishwarya Rai has been almost a regular at Cannes.

Her role in the film won her international recognition and the next year, she attended the film festival as a member of the jury.

“The designers are so excited and so generous and so creative and they come up with so many ideas that you actually get spoiled for choice. It gets very, very difficult to be able to zero in and decide on which one to wear,” says Aishwarya.

In 2007, after her marriage with Abhishek Bachchan, the couple attended the festival together. Much to the envy of women the world over, Rai has consistently looked stunning on the red carpet.

Since her first stint with fame as Miss World in 1994, Aishwarya has been very successful as an actress, both in India and abroad.

In her upcoming release Sarkar Raj, the beautiful lady stars opposite hubby Abhishek and daddy-in-law Amitabh Bachchan.

“I have fantastic in-laws and I think that’s when a girl’s blessed. When you don’t feel you’ve gone to a new home or a foreign home. When you feel as comfortable with them as your parents and the similar friendship, it’s great,” says the beautiful actress.

Aishwarya’s next english language release is Pink Panther 2 in February 2009. The film also stars Steve Martin, Jean Reno and Andy Garcia. Source: ndtvmovies.com

Mallanna gets ready

Mallanna (Kanthasamy in Tamil), with Vikram & Shriya in the lead, is getting ready. Post production work in full swing and the audio will be launched on May 19.

It is a superhero film with outstanding special effects and grandeur. The photo session and the promo shows Vikram in six getups, including that of a lady, a Zulu, a Krissh-like comic-book hero, Ramana Maharshi , and with a rooster mask.

In a couple of photos, the Vikram-Shirya pair looks like business executives flanked by Africans in the backdrop of Sahara desert. The album has turned out to be a curious product in the industry.

Aishwarya Rai goes beyond glitz at Cannes

Aishwarya Rai, a regular at the Cannes Film Festival red carpet and L'Oreal brand ambassador, is going beyond her glitz and glamour tag. She is beginning to reinvent herself on the global scene as an activist for social and humanitarian causes.

As a step in that direction, the Bollywood diva will, alongside Queen Noor of Jordan, address a press conference May 14 at Hotel Martinez in Cannes to announce the third edition of the International Tribunes Cinema Verite event that will take place in Geneva (Oct 6 to 8) and Paris (Oct 9-10) later this year.

Cinema Verite is a special film event dedicated to films and social actions that promote human rights and the eight Millennium Development Goals adopted by the United Nations.

The Cinema Verite event, hosted by the Cinema Verite Institute, has in past years seen the participation of Hollywood actresses such as Susan Sarandon, Meg Ryan, Ellen Birkin and Sharon Stone. Aishwarya will be the first non-Hollywood actress to lend her name to the cause.

Her husband, Abhishek Bachchan, who is also there to attend the opening ceremony of the 62nd Cannes Film festival, will be present at the press meet.

This year's Cinema Verite event is set to include a special focus on India with the screening of Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar Raj, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya and Abhishek. Here, she plays an executive of a multinational company who is sent to oversee the setting up of a plant in rural India that makes political tensions erupt.

Business News: Nifty may trade in a range of 200 points

The general feedback is that though the flows are positive, it’s not indicating a proper direction either side. Either on upside or on the downside, so Nifty will be clearly in that range of 200 points but Monday is going to be a very crucial day.

Here is a verbatim transcript of Research Analyst, Nimesh Shah’s comments on CNBC-TV18. Also watch the accompanying video.Volumes would be an important factor to watch out for in today’s trade, yesterday they were low and despite weakness in the region we actually outperformed yesterday and the good part today is that atleast all the Asian regions are doing well.

I spoke to large dealing rooms in the morning today and the general feedback is that though the flows are positive, it’s not indicating a proper direction either side. Either on upside or on the downside, so we will be clearly in that range of 200 points on the Nifty but Monday is going to be a very crucial day.

General feedback says if the results come either in favor of UPA or NDA, we might see a 5-7% upside from these levels in days to come but no one wants to bet for today’s trade because Saturday is going to be a very important day in terms of the election results.

News: Techie gets Rs 1 cr for Nims goof

The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) to pay Rs 1 crore to a software professional whom its doctor had rendered incapitated nearly two decades ago.

This is the highest compensation awarded for medical negligence in the country.
The software engineer, Mr Prashant S. Dhananka of Bengaluru, was operated for a tumour in his left chest by a cardiac surgeon, Dr P.V. Satyanarayana, at Nims in September 1990.

Though Mr Dhananka was admitted for diagnostic surgery, Dr Satyanarayana performed a curative surg-ery without his consent. Following the surgery, he became a paraplegic, suffering paralysis and other serious complications.

Mr Dhananka was 20 years old at that time. After the surgery, he was incapable of performing his personal chores necessitating a constant attendant.

Mr Dhananka sued the hospital for medical negligence, and the National Co-nsumer Disputes Redressal Commission awarded him Rs 15.5 lakh against his demand for Rs 7.57 crore.

He then moved the court, and argued his own case. He told the court that he has been rendered incapacitated and had lost his dream of a happy married life. His colleagues are well settled abroad drawing hefty pay packs compared to his nominal pay scales due to his physical disability. The hospital denied negligence.

On Thursday, the Supre-me Court awarded Mr Dhananka the largest-ever compensation for medical negligence.“We must record that though a sense of deep injury was discernible through his protracted struggle while confined to a wheel chair, he remained unruffled and behaved with quiet dignity, pleading his own case bereft of any rancour or invective for those who in his perception had harmed him,” said the apex court bench of Justices B.N. Agrawal, G.S. Singhwi and H.S. Bedi.

Mr Dhananka stays in Bengaluru and works in an IT firm. He could not be contacted.

Asked about the judgment, Nims officials said Dr Satyanarayana had left the hospital in 1993 and the hospital could not be blamed for his negligence.

Politics News: PRP dream: Chiranjeevi CM with 40 seats

Praja Rajyam managers are expecting the party to win not less than 40 Assembly seats and expect to bargain for the Chief Minister’s post for party chief Chiranjeevi with support from either the Congress or the Telugu Desam in a hung House.

If the PR fails to secure not more than 30 seats, it will extend support either to the UPA or with the NDA at the Centre in exchange for a berth in the Cabinet.

The party general secretary, Mr Allu Aravind, on Thursday indicated that the PR was keeping its options at the Centre, saying, “We will take a step in the interests of the state.”

The former TD leaders in the PR are stepping up pressure on the leadership not to align with TD. Leaders like Mr T. Devender Goud and Mr Bhuma Nagi Reddy, have pointed out that being the fledgling party’s very existence would be threatened if the PR supports the TD.

Instead, they prefer supporting the Congress. It is learnt that based on Kapu-Kamma rivalry in coastal Andhra, the PR leadership is also averse to

The plan is still in a state of flux but GM and the union could finalize terms as early as next week, the paper said.(Reporting by Ajay Kamalakaran in Bangalore; Editing by Anshuman Daga)

Politics News: BJP woos Babu to back NDA

With the exit polls predicting a slender lead for the UPA, the BJP has intensified its efforts to woo the Telugu Desam.

The BJP is likely to invite the TD chief, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, to join the NDA government if his party is unable to form a government in AP.

According to BJP leaders, the TD’s support can tilt the balance in favour of NDA at the national level. BJP leaders expect the TD to win around 20 Lok Sabha seats. Even if its tally is 15 Lok Sabha seats, the TD can play a crucial role they feel.

Senior leaders of the BJP including Mr M. Venkaiah Naidu and Mr Bandaru Dattatreya have been entrusted with the task of wooing the TD. They have been discussing strategies with the party’s top leaders including Mr L.K.Advani and Mr Rajnath Singh.

“The BJP prefers the support of any party barring the Left and the Congress,” said the BJP spokesperson, Mr N. Ramachander Rao. “We have no objection in taking the support from Mr Naidu. The TD is keen to prevent the Congress from forming government at the Centre.”

He added that the TD would be given due respect if it joined hands with BJP. “TD leaders can trust us and extend their support to BJP which has rich experience in running coalition governments,” he added.

BJP leaders feel the Third Front would not get enough seats to form government.

BJP leaders say that if the TD extends support, it will encourage other parties too to join hands with the NDA.

Meanwhile, an “exit poll” put out by the TD shows a big win for Mahakutami.

The party predicted 179 seats for Mahakutami, Congress 57, Praja Rajyam 21, MIM 4, BJP 3, and others five.

It said 25 seats would see “close contests,” like Sakshi TV had done in its exit poll on Wednesday.

Politics News: PRP ready for tie-up with any party

Prajarajyam party general secretary Allu Aravind on Thursday dismissed the exit poll predictions as inaccurate and misleading and said his party would support any coalition at the Centre that would protect the interests of Andhra Pradesh and PRP.

Asserting that the results on May 16 will give the PRP 15 Lok Sabha and 160 assembly seats, Aravind said at a media conference that the party is ready to work with any coalition or party, including the TRS, in a post-poll scenario. "We will support any party that safeguards and protects the interests of the state and also the interests of our party.

As of now, all parties feel that PRP has a major role to play at the Centre and the state as well. In politics, everyone is in need of everyone. So, no one needs to displease the other. Once the numbers are out, several permutations and combinations have to be worked out. Yes, we are also willing to work with the TRS if the need arises," he said.

Denying that BJP leader L K Advani had telephoned party chief Chiranjeevi and sought his support for the NDA, Aravind said several seniors from other parties including the Congress were in touch with him. He said it would not be right on his part to spell out the names of these leaders without their consent.

Debunking the theory put forth for the PRP by psephologists, Aravind questioned their credibility. "The post-poll exercise by a lot of news channels paints a very diverse picture. There is lot of variation in the predictions made by each of these channels and survey agencies. The whole exercise seems to be devoid of a socio-scientific approach and the small sample size itself is questionable," he rued.

"One survey gave us zero Lok Sabha seats and another gave us five. The credibility of these psephologists is at stake. In 2004, most exit polls predicted a win for the NDA, but the results proved otherwise," he said.

The PRP general secretary however scaled down the number of seats for his party from the earlier 292 to 160 saying, "I cannot give a conflicting number to that already announced by the party president. We will win 15 Lok Sabha and 160 assembly seats."

Allu said the process of weeding out coverts in the party would start within a week from the announcement of election results. "It is a serious issue and we are very keen on it," he added.

Poilitics News: YSR confident of another win

YS Rajasekhara Reddy Thursday became the first Andhra Pradesh chief minister to complete five years in office and was confident of a second successive term with the stage set for the counting of votes polled for the assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress leader, popularly known as YSR, had taken oath as the state’s 14th chief minister at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here on May 14, 2004 after he led his party to a landslide victory, ending the over nine year rule of the Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) N. Chandrababu Naidu.

YSR, who returned to the state capital Thursday from a holiday, cut a cake to mark the completion of his five years in office.

"YSR is the first chief minister to complete a five years in office. No chief minister since the state’s formation in 1956 has completed a full term," said Finance Minister K. Rosaiah.

Despite having been in the top post more than one time, three former chief ministers could not complete five years in office.

They either opted for elections before the assembly completed its term or had to quit due to different reasons.

Naidu was the longest serving chief minister in the state’s history but he went in for early elections in 2004.Unlike the previous tenures of the Congress party when it used to frequently change the chief ministers due to internal squabbles, the 60-year-old YSR had a smooth term as he faced no dissension.

YSR swept to power due to the massive anti-incumbency wave, the agrarian crisis, and suicides by hundreds of farmers. He launched massive pro-people programmes like free electricity to farmers, waiver of farm loans, housing and land distribution for poor, monthly pensions for widows, old age people and handicapped, Rajiv Arogyasri or community health

insurance scheme, rice at Rs.2 per kg and four percent reservations for backward classes among Muslims. His government also took up an ambitious Jalayagnam programme to complete all pending irrigation projects at a whopping cost of Rs.1.5 trillion to provide water to an additional 10 million acres of land.

His government also launched first-ever direct talks with the Maoist guerrillas. However, after the failure of peace talks, he dealt with the Maoists with an iron hand, eliminating the top leadership of the rebel group.

However, the term saw the opposition making serious allegations of corruption against him, especially in awarding contracts for the irrigation projects and works for outer ring road around Hyderabad.

YSR also failed to keep his allies with him. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) all parted ways and joined hands with the main opposition TDP to fight last month’s elections under the banner of Mahakutami or the grand alliance.

But with no strong anti-incumbency, YSR is confident of retaining the power in the state despite the grand alliance and the emergence of the Praja Rajyam of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi.

"Congress will win the election hands down. We will get at least 230 assembly seats," YSR had said just before the polls. In 2004, the Congress had bagged 185 seats on its own in the 294-member assembly. The Congress-led alliance had won 226 seats.

"This government has taken several historic pro-people measures during the last five years. Both the people of the state and the Congress high command are happy with YSR. We won the last election and we are going to win this election too," said Rosaiah.

Education News : RBI selects Karnataka to introduce course on financial sector

Bangalore:
Keen to improve the country's "financial literacy", the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to introduce financial sector issues as part of the curriculum in schools and colleges and chosen Karnataka for the pilot project.

The plan is part of the central bank's platinum jubilee celebrations.

"As an enduring legacy of the RBI which completes 75 years in 2009, we have decided to improve financial literacy of students at the school and college level. We will do the pilot project in Karnataka," RBI Governor D. Subbarao told reporters here after state Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa agreed to support it.

The pilot project will be launched to commemorate the RBI's platinum jubilee in coordination with the state and central governments. Teachers at the school and college levels will be involved along with noted people in the academia.

"The curriculum will have the latest knowledge, so that students will have a minimum understanding of the issues in the financial sector," Subbarao said at the end of his two-day visit to this tech hub, the first visit since taking over as governor on Sep 5 last year.
